Urban hiking.

9 Aug

One of the things that I love most about living in the city is that I don’t need a car. I can walk pretty much anywhere I need to go, and for places further away, such as the east bay, I just take BART. We’re also Zipcar members, so that if something does come up where we absolutely must have a car, we always have access to one nearby. Zipcar is perfect for small trips, an hour here or there around the city, for example. Occasionally we take it on longer day trips, and while it’s cheaper than renting a car, the cost of these trips can quickly add up.

So then, how do we get out and about, and find some peace and quiet without spending a fortune?

We take urban hikes!

We started doing these hikes when we lived in Chicago. We lived in the neighborhood of Rogers Park and would walk all around the Chicago north shore. Sometimes we would walk all the way back to our alma mater, Northwestern University. When we moved to San Francisco we continued our tradition of urban hiking. Usually we don’t plan our routes very carefully, we just put on some good shoes, pack a light bag and set off! The nice thing about hiking in the city is that you know you’ll never be too far from civilization if something were to happen (or if you get hungry). Somedays we’ll head out to the ocean, other days up to Twin Peaks or Bernal Heights. Chinatown, Noe Valley and Northbeach are all great neighborhoods to explore too! And of course, there’s always Golden Gate Park, a wonderful oasis in the middle of the urban chaos.

Somedays we’ll literally walk all day, and other days we’ll just do a quick hour or two after dinner. Last night fell into the latter category. We explored, saw some nature, stretched our legs and returned home feeling refreshed.

Here are some of the things we found last night on our adventure.

Now, I’m off to relax before my last-ever 12 hour clinic shift tomorrow (yay)! I have lots to do this week: dinner party on Tuesday, packing on Wednesday and leaving for England on Thursday!!
