Unrequited Love

3 Nov

Is there anything worse than being in the throes of unrequited love?  I would argue “no,” especially if you’re a 15 month old and the object of your desire is an indifferent housecat, named Sashi.

"The course of true love never did run smooth, Mom."

The beloved.

My sous chef spends hours hours each day trying to win the affection of her beloved. Initially she attempted to poke Sashi in the eye, while loudly proclaiming “EYYYEEE,” hoping that Sashi would be impressed with her burgeoning knowledge of anatomy.  When this didn’t work, my sous chef attempted to do the same with Sashi’s “EEAARR,” but her efforts were fruitless.

Next, my little one decided a change of tactics was in order to gain the devotion of her much adored pet.  She thought, perhaps, she and Sashi could bond in one of Sashi’s favorite places;  the place where she goes to escape the world, to forget about the stresses of everyday life, to relax unperturbed – her litterbox.  Yet, each time Sashi quietly creeps into the basement, newspaper under her paw, to arrange her litter into carefully constructed piles, she is suddenly caught off guard by wild applause from my sous chef, who stands behind her screaming loudly, “SASHI PEE-PEE!!!”

One would think that Sashi would be flattered by such attention.  But, sadly, she is not.

Now, my sous chef has resorted to one of the oldest tricks in the books.  She is bringing Sashi tokens of affection in an attempt to win her devotion.  So far, she has presented  Sashi with: a goldfish cracker, a sippy cup, a dead leaf from the yard, a pancake, a hairbrush and several dirty socks, but to no avail. Yesterday, my sous chef decided to up the ante and went into her Daddy’s office in search of a gift that would truly express her love for her dear cat.  She finally zeroed in on Personal Finance for Dummies*, which she carefully pulled off the bookshelf and took to Sashi.  Here’s what happened next…

My poor sous chef, will she ever learn?

*We own this book?
